Mount Amiata, today famous for its ski runs, was, thousands of years ago, a huge volcano whose eruptions inundated the surrounding hills for centuries with lava. Some volcanic activity, even if only residual, is still present! Various spring of hot water gush out throughout the mountain. These springs, rich in sulphur and other healing elements, were popular among merchants, pilgrims and the aristocracy of the Roman Empire, who, in the Middle Ages, crossed the Via Cassia and immersed themselves in these thermal springs.The sources still flow today near just about every village and the most important spas are:

Bagni San Filippo is located between the volcanic cone of the Mount Amiata and the Val d’Orcia. There has been evidence of people, including famous ones like Lorenzo the Magnificient, coming here to relax at the spa since the late 12th century. The wellbeing centre is the main attraction at Bagni San filippo. The water is refreshing, relaxing and rejuvenating. Here you can enjoy complete pampering body and beauty treatments. BAGNO VIGNONI

Situated south of San Quirico,Bagno Vignoni has been a popular holiday spot since Roman times.The characteristic of Bagno Vignoni,besides the thermal waters,is its unchanged structure.Infact,the main square of this town is made by boiling water that flows at 52°.The thermal water basin is the middle of the square and it is closed on three sides by the town walls and one metre and a half tall.From ancient times people from all over Europe came here to relax at the therapeutic thermal baths.The list of well-known people is long and includes royalty,popes and authors.
