…wine & oil

The wine trail of Montecucco…

The town of Seggiano represents an essential stopping place for the wine trail of Montecucco, one of the most important but also one of the most recently recognized among the wine trails of the province of Grosseto. A very good wine is produced in the territory of the town of Seggiano; it is not yet famous such as the other Tuscan wines but the Monteccucco has already the identification of D.O.C.The Montecucco D.O.C. is a wine characterised by an intense colour and a strong taste.

There are five qualities of red and white wine:

  • Montecucco rosso: has an intense ruby- red color; a winey fragrance and a harmonious, dry flavour; rightly tannic;  12°.

The best coupling of this fruity wine is with the chestnut I.G.P. of the Monte Amiata.

  • Montecucco Sangiovese: is a wine composed at least for 85% by “sangiovese” vine. It has an intense ruby- red color; a fruity fragrance and a dry flavour; lightly tannic; 12°

This kind of red wine is perfectly combined with beef, wild boar and with seasonned Tuscan pecorino cheeses.

  •  Montecucco Riserva: is a wine with an intense ruby- red colour; a winey fragrance and a light wooden flavour; 12.5%.

  • Montecucco bianco: is a wine composed at least for 60% by Tuscan “Trebbiano” vine.

It is straw-colored; has a fresh fragrance, lightly fruity, and a dry flavour; 11.5°         This kind of wine, particularly  refined for fragrance and flavour, is combined with vegetables, soups and appetizers.

  • Montecucco Vermentino: composed at least for 85% of “Vermentino” vine.Has a straw- colored; a refined fragrance and a dry, soft savory flavor; 11.5°

The delicacy of this wine is perfectly combined with fish dishes.

The Montecucco D.O.C. is promoted and valorized by the “ Consorzio di Tutela” established in the 2000. It is composed by the local wine- growing producers with the purpose to protect the quality of the Montecucco. There are several enterprises of information and promotion of the product organized by Consorzio di Tutela organizes.

The set of the Consorzio di Tutela consists of a tasting room, in which is possible to know and to taste the wines of the D.O.C.

To participate in guided tasting all bookings are welcome, phoning at the num.: 0564/994630, or sending an e-mail to info@stradadelvinomontecucco.it.

…and the Olivastra seggianese.

The most important and famous product in the town of Seggiano is the olive oil of the “olivastra” seggianese D.O.P. This kind of olive tree is only located in Seggiano and it produces a unique olive oil with a very sweet taste.

The “olivastra” is typical “cultivar” of the Monte Amiata. This is a kind of very resistant olive tree which produces a type of olives that gain a very dark color when matured. This olive oil comes from old aged olive trees which have been on the Monte Amiata since the Etruscan Age.                                  Seggiano is the town of the olive oil because it was in this place where the tree which takes the name “olivastra seggianese” was born. Despite its unattractive aspect, this tree produces a very precious olive oil and a little diffused olive oil which has a sweet character to the taste. This olive oil has a fruity and very fresh aroma, with light traces of matured banana.  It is not a sour olive oil and, for this reason, it is suggested anti- cholesterol.

This kind of olive oil is excellent to taste with bread.

In the town of Seggiano it will be possible to visit, very soon, the “Museo dell’Olio Itinerante”, which will also host the set of the Consorzio di Tutela of the new D.O.P. “Olivastra” of Seggiano. The main enterprise of  this project is the development of the local typical product and the reclamation of Seggiano’s traditions. There are several are the events organized in the area of production to taste this delicious olive oil.Very important is the festival of “Olearie”, organized in Seggiano during December.
