Among history, art, culture and pure entertainment.

If you are tired of visit a town only for the art and history, we suggest you to alternate the cultural holiday with an experience of only pure entertainment. Depend on  the period of the year you can find in Piancastagnaio many activities and festivals .

From 27th October to 1st November  you can participate to an important town festival called “Crastata”, since 1967 in the ancient centre there is this festival where the “protagonist” is the chestnut, you can eat typical products  and you can taste aromatic wine. In June there is the “palio” Gran Premio Saint Filippo, where every district races for the victory. In new year’s day in Piazza Castello there is a fabulous party free-for-all, where you can see at midnight many pinwheels in the sky. If you love the nature and the sport : in winter you can ski, the territory has all the necessary ,in other part of the year you can hike on the mountain (there are many paths for every type of difficulty), rice the horses or stroll in the numerous nature park.

If you love the adventure you can  visit Sassocolato or Bacheca cave, inside Mount Penna nature park.

Piancastagnaio is not the usual boring town, it is more, come on to explore it!

Anyone interested in history, culture  and art  can visit the many well preserved sites of  ancient Piancastagnaio.

Day 1

From Abbadia San Salvatore to Piancastagnaio  Starting from Abbadia the first “art meeting” is  with the little church Saint Bartolomeo. In front of the facade there is a lawn ,here there is a secular chestnut. Inside the church there are fragments of famous wall painting .

Day 2

At the begin of the streets for Santa Fiora there is the Madonna of San Pietro sanctuary . Inside there are important works of  Francesco Nasini.

Day 3

In the centre of the city you can find the Pieve of Santa Maria Assunta.  Not far from here there is Matteotti square, the ancient square of municipality, here there are the local government and mayor palaces.

Day 4

The most important monument is the Aldobradesca fortress.

You can visit the castle because now is a museum.Near the walls there is a park of secular chestnut graves.

Day 5

An other important building is the Bourbon del Monte palace

Near the walls  there is a town called “the Dish of the Witches”: only a stone remains of his fountain and it has the form of a plat; the legend tells the witches ate here their “sabba” sacrifices.

We suggest to explore all Piancastagnaio and during your trip to try the typical restaurants.
