Food & Drink

Make a wish,open your eyes…

Let the odour and the flavour wrap you…

The local products of Castoglione d’Orcia bring you in a magic atmosphere which involves all of your senses..

Take a look at the tables.. you will be attracted by a fantastic display of food and drink…

A typical table of the Val d’Orcia consists of:

A bottle of “Orcia” wine; pici or bread soup, extra-virgin olive oil and the pecorino cheese and ravaggiolo cheese which are very good approached to the local honey..

So let’s explore this magic world!

“Orcia” wine :

In 1999 the “Orcia” wine obtained the DOC seal of quality (denomination of origin controlled).

This young wine is now considered a good follower of the wines of Montepulciano and Montalcino thanks to its plumpness and density. It draws its unique flavour from a specific combination of Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo and Foglia Tonda which are produced thanks to the 150 hectares of vineyards in Val d’ Orcia.

Pecorino cheese:

this cheese is part of the local diet.

It is a seasoned cheese so it has a strong taste which is good if it’s tasted with a drop of honey and a glass of red wine.

Ravaggiolo cheese:

A soft tender cacio cheese which is conserved in fern leaves

Honey:

Val d’Orcia is also famous for its old honey production, which makes for a good taste to complete a meal…

 extra-virgin olive oil:

Hand-picked olives and the time are the keys of a good olive oil.

The olives are pressed within 72 h. and are preserved and areated to ensure that the typical taste of the olive oil is preserved.

Pici:

A poor dish which was so common among peasantry a long time ago,it now gives its contribute to the local kitchen.

Pici are a sort of spaghetti but short and usually dressed with bread debris, garlic, cheese and extra-virgin olive oil.

Minestra di Pane :

Another poor dish which takes its roots in the poor peasant kitchen.

It   consists in boiled beans with broth, garlic and toasted bread.

It must be served hot with onion.

A small tip:

If you want to try all these traditional dishes and wines, we strongly recommend you “Osteria del Leone”: a very typical restaurant which gives you the flavours and the feeling of the past traditions at the same time.Average price: 28 euros ( wine not included )
