Castiglione d’Orcia is a comune of 2.505 inhabitants in the Siena province. Situated in Tuscany, Italy.
It’s placed in the center of the Orcia Valley, it’s closer from the Cassia’s road, situated on a hill in the northern ramification of the pendice of the Mount Amiata. The municipality also includes Rocca d’Orcia, a medieval village placed on a hill.
There are mentions of the village since 714, when the territory was a possession of the Aldobrandeschi family and was known as Petra. In 1252 it was declarated free Council. In 1274 it was included in the territory of Santa Fiora that was some areas with the Aldobrandeschi family. In the XIV century, we know for certain that it already belonged to Siena, that, later, gave it to powefull families such as the Piccolombi and the Salimbeni in exchange for financial favours, since they wanted to use Castiglione d’Orcia as a fortress.
In the 1605 the village belonged to Florence, who shared it with a family from Bologna.
Nowadays it’s a very nice and typical village of Tuscany, really small but with a very beautiful environment.
