Abbadia San Salvatore is a comune in the Province of Siena in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 110 km southeast of Florence and about 60 km southeast of Siena, in the area of Mount Amiata.
It had its origins as a Medieval monastic feudal; in 1777 it became capital of a very large community from which in 1867 were removed the districts of Campiglia d’Orcia, Bagni di San Filippo and Caselle del Vivo, aggregated to the municipal of Castiglione d’Orcia.
It was for many years the most important town, due to the main entrance to the mercury mines, which guaranteed to the village for almost all the XXth Century the role of the territory’s first economic centre.
The attractions in the town include the medieval village, which is exceptionally well preserved: it is an interesting example of a mountain castle with Gothic and Renaissance houses, for example the Palazzo del Potestà (15th century), the church of Santa Croce and the Abbey of S. Salvatore.
